In dealing with
modems, strings are used to customize your dialup connections with a specific
modem. In order to add a string to your modem, you first need to enter
the control panel, and then double click on the icon called Modems.
From here you press the button labeled Properties.
From the properties screen, you need to click on the tab labeled Connection,
and then go to Advanced Settings.
Near the bottom of the advanced settings screen, there is a text area labeled Extra
settings. This is where your added modem strings should be located.
Individual strings should be separated by a semicolon. By default, this
area should be blank.
Some strings that you may find useful for US Robotics Sportster Modems
- S27=64 disables Selective Reject
- &MO disables V.42bis error control
- &K3 disables MNP5 compression
- S15=136 disables V.42 detect
If you experience lock-ups or frequent disconnects with an x2 modem, add the string S15=128.
